The damaged Calvin Theatre marquee is a nagging problem with a simple solution … build a “bump out” and extend the curb line away from the marquee’s edge.
Shortly after the Calvin re-opened, in the late 1990s, the marquee started being hit by delivery trucks pulling up in front. The top right corner of the trucks overhang the curb and strike the marquee. At the time I was serving as director of the theater.
After being hit and repaired two or three times, a meeting with city personnel was convened at the Calvin and the problem was discussed. The “bump out” idea was suggested, but quickly discarded because altering the curb design would be “too involved” and hard to make happen.
Fast forward from then to now and the problem remains and we have an eyesore. I say build the “bump out” and the problem will go away.
A little distance goes a long way.
