AMHERST – A memorial service has been planned Wednesday for Jonathan Shaw at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
The service for family and friends was organized by the Coalition to End Rape Culture and will be held in the second floor library at New Africa House at 180 Infirmary Way from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
The event is being hosted by the Center for Women & Community and Shaw’s family members are planning to attend, said Rebecca Lockwood, an associate director at the center.
Shaw was a member of the Coalition to End Rape Culture, a registered student organization at UMass Amherst.
“Please join us in honoring our beloved friend Jon’s life and his great impact on the UMass Amherst community,” the coalition wrote on its Facebook page. “All are welcome to this space and time will be held for folks to share thoughts and memories of Jon.”
A senior mathematics major, the 24-year-old Shaw, of Newton, was found dead April 27 in his dorm room. UMass officials said at the time that there was no suspicion of foul play and the cause of Shaw’s death is being determined by a state medical examiner.
A brief obituary posted on the website of Lehman, Reen & McNamara Funeral Home in Brighton states that Shaw was the son of Kimberlee Munroe-Swift of Hollis, New Hampshire, the late Philip Shaw and the brother of David Nathaniel Shaw.
The obituary states that Shaw’s funeral services will be private.
