SOUTHAMPTON — Just minutes after students were dismissed Wednesday afternoon from the William E. Norris Elementary School, some 10 police cruisers swarmed the area nearby in response to an incident that began in Northampton and ended with one arrest after a rollover crash that sent one person to a hospital.

Police from Northampton, Easthampton and Southampton responded to the intersection of Pomeroy Meadow Road and Gunn Road Extension at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday — about the time that a man rolled over the car he was driving.

The Acura sedan hit a utility pole and landed on its passenger side. The 18-year-old female passenger was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield with “significant” injuries, Southampton Police Lt. Ian Illingsworth said.

The driver was arrested by Northampton police.

“The incident originated in Northampton,” Illingsworth said. “I know it’s an ongoing investigation for them.”

However, Northampton Police declined to provide any details about the incident Wednesday evening.

Illingsworth said that Southampton Police plan to charge the driver with additional motor vehicle violations.

However, he could not provide further details on the incident, including the names of those involved.

In an email sent to parents Wednesday afternoon, Norris School secretary Michelle Carmichael said that the accident did not involve any of the school’s students or staff.
