Since most people have no objection to the presence of off-leash dogs at Smith Field Farms, and the vast majority of dogs are not aggressive to runners or others, it is unfair to say that they “pose a threat to everyone else,” as stated by writers of a May 6 letter in the Gazette.
On the paths alongside the fields, dogs have a unique opportunity to express their natures — sniffing, running, socializing and playing. This is a wonderful thing we have that is not available in other towns, where dogs live in enclosed spaces and get only restricted leash walks.
Given how humans have so many diversions available to them not available to dogs, and given that lots of people have an urge to run, it is surprising how they seem oblivious to the needs of these fleet-footed, loving animals.
It is little enough to grant, given the great comfort they provide to their owners and the many others who live in our community. If people are willing to take a broader view of the problem, I sincerely hope that a compromise can be worked that will enable runners and dogs to share this open space with minimal risk of harm.
