HADLEY — Because the Hadley Cleanup Day organized for May 7 was rained out, Select Board member Donald Pipczynski will try again Saturday.

He said the cleanup event is aptly timed to prepare the town’s streets for the Memorial Day Parade on May 29.

“Most of the town properties are all done, but we’d still like to dress up a few more streets,” said Pipczynski, who is organizing the event with funds approved by the Select Board. “Most of the areas where people enter from other communities — we want to make sure their first impression of Hadley is as a clean, agricultural town.”

Pipczynski said he invites all interested in helping to meet him at Hopkins Academy at 9 a.m. Saturday. The event runs until 12:30 p.m., he said.

Pipczynski said he’s been driving around, finding areas that need cleaning and it has inspired him to propose a plastic bag ban to his fellow Select Board members.

“Everywhere we went, there’s plastic bags with styrofoam cups,” he said. “It’s time for us to start discussing how we can be a greener community.”
