A week after the UMass softball team swept Dayton to close the regular season, very little changed between the Minutewomen and Flyers in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
UMass, the No. 3 seed, scored three times in the first inning en route to a 5-0 win over No. 2 Dayton, Friday at George Washington.
UMass will face No. 5 Saint Joseph’s, Saturday. The game was scheduled for noon, but was moved to 10:30 a.m. because of the possibility of rain.
The winner of that game could be in a prime position if weather continues to affect play. Thunderstorms are expected Saturday.
GW’s field does not have lights, so games can only go until dark and the tournament needs to be completed by Sunday because the NCAA tournament field will be announced later that night.
If the event can’t be completed, the team without any losses would be the champion and receive the A-10’s automatic bid.
“It’s crucial for us that we continue to stay on this path just because of the weather that is coming in here,” UMass coach Kristi Stefanoni said.
UMass lost two of three games to Saint Joseph’s in early April.
“We haven’t really talked too much about how that series went,” Stefanoni said. “We’ll look at a lot of video. It’s a whole new team in a whole new tournament. We’ll see what comes of it.”
Meg Colleran was dominant in the circle against Dayton. The sophomore pitcher scattered five hits and didn’t walk anyone while striking out six.
“She’s really matured as the season’s gone on,” Stefanoni said. “From the beginning of the year til now, it’s a whole different Megan in pressure situations. She’s definitely blossomed throughout the season and is in a good place right now.”
Jena Cozza continued to be an offensive catalyst for UMass (26-22). She had three hits in the game and scored the first run.
Lindsay Zenk had two hits and drove in two runs for the Minutewomen.
Tufts 5, Amherst 4 — No. 2-seed Amherst fell into the losers’ bracket of the double-elimination NESCAC Tournament at Holman Stadium in Nashua, New Hampshire.
Amherst will play a team to be determined, Saturday at 10 a.m.
Max Steinhorn had three hits, a run and an RBI for Amherst (24-12), while Connor Gunn hit a two-run home run to right field in the fourth.
Rhode Island 3, UMass 1 — The Rams scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to beat the Minutemen (14-25, 7-12 A-10) in Kingston.
UMass had just three hits and its only run was unearned.
