HADLEY — After Town Meeting voted down an article proposing the Hooker School site be used for a new library, library trustees are looking for input from residents.

Discussion on Town Meeting floor, said Jo-Ann Konieczny, chair of the Goodwin Memorial Library trustees, was cut short and that left trustees grasping for direction.

“We were unable to hear at Town Meeting what people really thought,” said Konieczny on Tuesday, explaining that trustees remain unclear as to whether people opposed the proposed site or the new library itself.

To get more answers, said Konieczny, trustees are asking residents to fill out an online survey .

“Mostly what’s important to us is what objections people have,” said Konieczny. “We asked people to rank their reasons and then we give them an open space to open comment.”

Konieczny said trustees have gotten about 200 responses so far and hope to see more before they stop accepting survey responses on May 31.

“Right now the biggest response we have is that people want to see a plan for the whole town before they take a vote on the library,” she said.

Molly Keegan, chair of the Select Board, said Tuesday that given the numerous potential projects in play, a townwide plan is something the board is actively pursuing.

“That’s something the Select Board is working very hard toward right now,” said Keegan, adding that members will likely seek public input in advance of fall Special Town Meeting. “We will be working the better part of the summer on that.”
