Much like Robert E. Lee’s march northward with the Confederate Army, the No. 8 Amherst women’s lacrosse season ended at Gettysburg.
Amherst lost 12-4 to No. 4 Gettysburg on Saturday in the NCAA Division III Championship Third Round in Middlebury, Vermont.
Gettysburg scored the game’s first two goals and held an 8-2 lead at the half.
Mia Haughton, Julia Cerend, Kate Wyeth and Claire Cagnassola scored for Amherst (13-5).
Gettysburg won 11-of-18 draw controls and won the ground ball battle 19-12.
Christy Forrest made eight saves in the Amherst net.
UMass 4, George Mason 2 — John Jennings hit a two-run home run that proved the difference Saturday at home.
Mike Geannelis also drove in a run for UMass (18-27,11-13 A-10).
Brandon Walsh allowed just two earned runs in eight innings and struck out 12 with just two walks and four hits.
