Jake Balderston struck out nine and allowed just one hit, pitching a complete game in the Amherst Regional baseball team’s 3-2 win over Agawam on Thursday in Amherst.
He also drove in what proved to be the winning run in the third inning with a sacrifice fly after Max Hopley led off the inning with a double.
Hopley had two hits and scored two runs for Amherst (5-12, 3-8 Valley).
Westfield Tech 4, Smith Vocational 1 — A three-run fifth allowed the Tigers (9-8) to pull away for the win in Northampton.
Ryan York had two hits for the Vikings, while Kevin Wackerbarth and Tom LaRiviere each had one.
Granby 17, Gateway 2 — The Rams sent its seniors out with an easy win in their final regular season home game.
Matt Bleakley had two hits, two runs and an RBI, and Bill Laporte had a hit and scored a run after being honored before the game.
Joe Desormier (two hits) and Noah Bleakley (three hits) each added three RBIs for Granby (17-2, 8-0 Bi-County North).
Frontier Regional 1, Belchertown 0 — The Red Hawks scored the winning run in the fifth inning.
Noah Barnes led Frontier (16-4, 8-2 Hampshire West) with two hits, including a double.
Nolan Muzyka, Evan Bourque, Seth Gewanter, Brandon Bryant and Bailey Powers hit singles.
Carl Tesche and Johnny Camerota hit doubles for Belchertown (11-7, 5-5), while Jack Kamins had two hits.
South Hadley 9, Turners Falls 3 — Alex Dragon and Adam Pilachowski drove in two runs each to help the Tigers clinch the Hampshire West title.
Ethan Fleming allowed one earned run and four hits in a complete game for South Hadley (16-4, 8-2).
Hopkins Academy 7, Greenfield 3 — Jon Morrison hit a triple and drove in a run for the Golden Hawks.
Caleb Wiatsch and Mike Curran also had RBIs for Hopkins (11-7, 5-5 Hampshire West).
Smith Academy 4, Pioneer 2 — Chris Darragh had two hits and two RBIs for the Falcons (7-10, 7-2 Hampshire East) in a road win.
Easthampton 9, Athol 2 — Mike Ryan and Brandon Bennet had two hits and two RBIs each for the Eagles (7-10, 4-5 Hampshire East) in a road win.
Softball
Granby 23, Renaissance 1 (5) — The Rams earned coach Gary Casey his 100th career win and themselves a spot in the postseason in the process.
The Rams (10-10) drew 22 walks and rolled over the Phoenix in a mercy-rule shortened five-inning game.
Abby Beauregard allowed one hit and one walk, while striking out 10 to earn the win.
Mallory Beauregard had a triple, four RBIs and scored two runs, while Emily Sawyer had a double, three RBI and three runs.
Frontier Regional 10, Greenfield 9 — Sarah Meunier drove in three runs, and Hanna LaClaire added two RBIs for the Red Hawks (12-6, 11-3 Franklin) in a road win.
East Longmeadow 10, Amherst Regional 3 — Aliya Bartmon had two hits and Mikah McNamara scored two runs, but the Hurricanes (2-17 fell at home.
Amherst Regional 9, Pope Francis 6 — The Hurricanes seniors got a happy ending for a tough season as Amherst won its final game of the season.
Senior Meghan Sharrick had three goals and fellow soon-to-be-graduates Oressa Gray-Mullen and Laney Morse each had one for Amherst (5-15).
The fourth senior, Madison Rodriguez, had a strong game on defense.
Northampton 11, Belchertown 1 — Henry Attias (goal, five assists), Matt Huggett (three goals, two assists), Evan Moulton (two goals, one assists), Luke Melcher two goals) and Henry Higgins (goal, assist) each had multiple points for the Blue Devils (12-6) on the road.
Ben McGarian had the lone goal for the Orioles (6-12).
