NORTHAMPTON — A former Northampton State Hospital building in the Village Hill neighborhood will be transformed by June 2017 into 25 condominiums described as affordably priced and energy-efficient, according to Patrick M. Goggins, who is marketing them.
Interior renovations began about two months ago at the large brick building, which formerly housed attendants at the state hospital, said Goggins, president of Goggins Real Estate at 79 King St.
According to Goggins, the former “rooming house” is one of a “handful of buildings” saved after the hospital closed in 1993 for conversion to other uses.
When the work is complete, the building will house more than two-dozen one- and two-bedroom condominiums with prices starting at $200,000. According to Goggins, they will be the lowest-priced housing option in Village Hill, which also includes single family homes, townhouses and apartments.
City officials said there is no state subsidy involved in this condominium project.
“The primary advantage is the location and proximity to downtown for the price,” Goggins said.
The new condos will be LEED-certified, easing costs for their owners, Goggins said. “That is a big factor in today’s world in terms of operational costs,” he added.
They will range in size from 800 to 1,300 square feet, and will have on-site parking as well as stations for electric cars.
Saloomey Construction Inc., of Otis, is the contractor.
