Amherst

A stop sign was stolen from the exit to the Amherst Golf Club, 365 South Pleasant St., at 10:57 a.m. Sunday. In addition, vandals carved a phallic symbol into the greens, which maintenance workers were able to remove before golfers began their rounds.

Irving Echevarria, 22, of Holyoke, was arrested at 6:23 a.m. Sunday on West Street on charges of leaving the scene of a property damage accident, negligent operation of a motor vehicle to endanger, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and failure to stay within marked lanes after the vehicle he was driving struck a fence, mailbox and tree on West Street, police said.

A man sleeping in a tent pitched on the lawn behind St. Brigid’s Church, 132 North Pleasant St., was awakened at 7:42 a.m. Saturday, advised to remove his belongings and sent on his way.

John F. Bedford, 33, of New York City, was arrested at 12:50 a.m. Saturday on Quadrangle Road on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

Northampton

A car hit a tree on Reservoir Road in Leeds about 4:55 p.m. Tuesday. The driver, a 69-year-old woman who was not identified by police, was transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield with serious injuries, but they are not believed to be life-threatening, according to Sgt. Josef Barszcz.
