CHESTERFIELD — The Northwestern District Attorney’s office has released the name of the man found in Damon Pond on Sunday, an apparent drowning victim.
Rafael Collazo, 55, of Florence was swimming with his family at a members-only beach off Damon Pond Road on Sunday evening when someone called 911. Collazo had been swimming to a floating dock in the middle of the pond, about 100 feet from the beach, according to Chesterfield Fire Chief David Hewes.
Rescuers found Collazo’s body about halfway out to the dock in 10-foot-deep water, Hewes said.
Northwestern District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Mary Carey declined to provide any additional information about the incident. Hewes said Collazo has a medical history that could have contributed to his death and that the state’s medical examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy.
