HADLEY – An 85-year-old Amherst woman was injured and taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield with injuries Tuesday morning after the car she was driving struck a tractor and then crashed into a utility pole in Hadley, according to police.
Police say the woman, whom they declined to name, was traveling south on Roosevelt Street in a sedan when she struck the front end of a John Deere tractor that was attempting a left hand turn with its left directional signal activated as she tried to pass it.
The collision forced the tractor to spin around and the woman’s car to veer off the road, striking a mailbox and then a utility pole, which snapped, Police Officer David Isakson said. The driver of the tractor was unhurt and police issued no traffic citations.
Isakson said the driver who was injured suffered arm and facial injuries and possible broken ribs.
The accident shut down Roosevelt Street between Knightly and Stockbridge roads until about 4 p.m. while a utility crew made repairs. The sedan was totalled and towed from the scene.
