HATFIELD – Scott McCoy was appointed Tuesday night as assessor, filling a two-month vacancy on the board.
McCoy was named unanimously by the Select Board and the remaining members of the board of assessors during a meeting in Town Hall.
Christopher Smith, a former assessor, also had applied to fill the vacancy created when Larry Williams, who was first elected in 2012, resigned April 1.
McCoy will join Stanley Pitchko and Ronald Punska on the three-member board. The position is part-time, with a salary of $1,710 for the year.
McCoy said in an interview after he was selected that he wants to serve “with a fresh set of eyes.”
He added that his uncle and godfather, James Dostal, a former employee of Northampton and president of its City Council, had inspired him to enter public service.
“I’ve held many management positions with large Fortune 500 companies — Staples, Blue Rhino,” McCoy said. “I feel that these positions have certainly aligned me with the business side of the position” as assessor.
McCoy said in his May 12 letter of interest that he has lived in Hatfield for three years, and his wife was born and raised in the town. He currently works as the general manager for Atlantic Golf and Turf in Turners Falls.
Smith said in his May 9 letter that he has lived in town for just over 40 years and currently serves on the Hatfield Redevelopment Authority. He cited his prior experience as a Hatfield assessor from 1996 to 2012. Before his previous role as assessor, Smith said he worked on the Industrial Development Commission from 1983 to 1988 and again in 1998 to 2007, at which point it evolved into the redevelopment authority.
Smith also served on the Hatfield Master Plan Committee in 1986 to 1987 and again in 1998 to 2001, as well as serving for one year on the Open Space Committee in 1986 to 1987.
Town Clerk Lydia Szych said McCoy will serve until the next town election in May when a permanent successor to fill the remainder of Williams’ term, which expires in 2018, will be elected.
