Barrie Wentzell is rocking the Robert Floyd Photo Gallery at 2 East St. in Southampton: Iconic black-and-white photographs Wentzell took of rock ‘n’ roll stars of the 1960s and 1970s are on view there through June 30. Some familiar faces: David Bowie, Alice Cooper, The Moody Blues, Roger Daltry, Elton John, James Brown, Leonard Cohen, Little Richard … the list goes on, and on.
Born in 1942 in England, Wentzell attended the Maidstone College of Art in Kent, England, in the late 1950s. In 1965, he turned a chance encounter with a young singer, Diana Ross, into a career; the image he made of the yet-to-be super star became the front cover photo of The Melody Maker, England’s renowned music publication. He was hired, then, to be the paper’s exclusive chief photographer, and worked there from 1965 to 1975.
Today, Wentzell lives in Toronto, Canada, and continues to contribute his work to exhibits.
There will be receptions Sunday and June 12 and 19, all from 1 to 6 p.m., with gallery talks at 3 p.m. www.robertfloydphoto.com
