A VW “bug” sits in a field on a back road between Williamsburg and Greenfield.

I have such fond memories of the old Volkswagen Beetles. Just seeing one always makes me smile.

My first  memory of the VW “bug” is sitting in the way-back, no car seats, no seat belts — just me and my best friend, while our sisters got to sit in the back seat, all the way to Jones Beach.

My second memory is the yellow bug my family rented from a friend. It became my first car and I drove it all summer. It fit so easily into any parking place and I just felt so cool in that tiny car.

I guess that explains why I had to stop when I saw this orange bug in a field as I traveled the back roads recently from Williamsburg to Greenfield.

The car appeared to have been much-loved. It looked so free resting there in that oversized field, and it sure brought back memories. And smiles.
