Three years ago, at the behest of some private interests, Mayor David J. Narkewicz removed some benches from some downtown public sidewalks.
Currently, in a dispute with its trustees, he is arguing that Forbes Library is a public institution. If he is to prevent Forbes from becoming the latest example of the privatization of public space, the mayor needs to be more ideologically clear-headed than he has been.
