AMHERST – A fire that heavily damaged a building at the Alpine Commons apartment complex Saturday afternoon remained under investigation Monday, with no cause yet identified, said Assistant Fire Chief Lindsay Stromgren.

A fire investigator for the Amherst Fire Department and an insurance investigator were both at the 133 Belchertown Road site throughout the day, Stromgren said. A fence was set up around the perimeter to keep people out.

While 16 tenants were displaced by the fire, no one inside the building was injured. And a cat that was inside when the fire broke out was rescued.

Stromgren said firefighters were able to find the cat hiding inside a room after a tenant alerted them that her pet was missing.

“They found the cat hiding and gave it to her,” Stromgren said.

The cat is not believed to have sustained any injuries, Stromgren said.
