Sometimes I see something and it becomes a puzzle for me. Close to the start of the Ray Stannard Baker Trail near Puffer’s Pond in Amherst, this inconspicuous stone, covered in fungus and at least one cobweb, piqued my curiosity earlier this week. Wrapped in two ribbons usually reserved for marking things slated for removal, I wonder what this is. It seems too far off the path to be an old trail marker and it’s on a precarious decline, so that is unlikely. It looks like it’s engraved, but it’s weather-worn and can’t be read. For now, it remains a mystery.
