NORTHAMPTON — As the upcoming special election to fill a City Council seat approaches, the last day to register to vote will be Thursday, June 16. The deadline comes three weeks before voters head to the polls July 7 for a preliminary election to narrow down candidates for the at-large seat being vacated by Jesse Adams

According to the mayor’s office, the Board of Registrars will be open until 8 p.m. in Room 4 in City Hall to register voters. June 16 is the last day to make changes of name, address or party enrollment to be in effect for the special preliminary election.

The four candidates on the ballot for the July 7 election are Andrew Smith, Marlene A. Morin, Blue M. Duval and Ryan R. O’Donnell, according to City Clerk Wendy Mazza.

Every precinct in the city will be open for the preliminary election. The results will narrow the pool to two candidates that will advance to a final election August 4.

Mail-in voter registration forms are available at the Northampton, Florence and Leeds post offices and must be received or postmarked by June 16 to be in effect in time for the election.

Voters may register online at www.mass.gov/elections. To register online, you must have a signature on file with the Registry of Motor Vehicles. For those who have a Massachusetts driver’s license or state ID card, an online voter registration application is available to register, update an address or change party affiliation. Online forms must be submitted by midnight June 16.
