HADLEY — Two teen hikers were found uninjured but thirsty Tuesday afternoon after they reported to police that they had become lost during a hike at J.A. Skinner State Park.
The hikers, both women, are 18 and 19 years old. They lost their way and called for help at 2:05 p.m., according to the State Police media relations office.
Police were able to locate the women by “pinging” their cellphones, thus determining their GPS coordinates with the help of a state police helicopter, police said. From there, first responders were able to find the women on foot.
The hikers were given water and led to safety in about an hour, police said.
State police and an ambulance from Western Massachusetts Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene. Responsibilities were later turned over to Department of Conservation and Recreation officers at the park.
