AMHERST — Local law enforcement will offer a community shredding event this weekend to let residents dispose of sensitive documents as a measure to prevent consumer fraud and identity theft.
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday in the parking lot of PeoplesBank at 56 Amity St. It will allow Hampshire County residents to shred as many boxes of bills, canceled checks, credit card information and other identifying documents as they want, according to a press release from the Amherst Police Department.
Valley Green Shredding of Westfield will destroy the documents on site. The event, which is presented by the Seniors and Law Enforcement Together Council along with law enforcement, Valley Green and PeoplesBank, also aims to raise awareness of how older adults are often targeted in identity theft, according to the release.
Businesses will not be allowed to participate.
