Improving health care for LGBT patients

Attorney General Maura Healey’s Office, along with the National LGBT Health Education Center at Fenway Institute and the Mass Hospital Association, has launched a series of training sessions to equip hospital staff with the skills to improve medical care for LGBT patients.

“LGBT patients, particularly those who are transgender, face unique challenges when accessing health care,” Healey said in a prepared statement.

Research by the Fenway Institute and the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition found that 20 percent of transgender patients delayed needed treatment out of fear of how they would be regarded; 29 percent reported having to teach their health care provider about transgender health issues.

The trainings are aimed at intake and admission procedures, data collection policies, and clinical care principles in support of the LGBT community. Over 100 providers attended the first one. Another will be held in Northampton in July.

Healey’s office also will provide guidance on health care and civil rights related issues at the Transgender Youth summit in Boston July 9.
