SOUTHAMPTON — An 80-year-old woman from Holyoke died as a result of injuries she sustained after a Friday morning crash at the intersection of Route 10 and Valley Road.
Mary Cadigan died Friday evening, most likely due to traumatic injuries she sustained in the crash, Northwestern District Attorney spokesman Steven Gagne said Saturday. The medical examiner will determine an official cause of death, he said.
Cadigan was transferred to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield following the crash that shut down a portion of Route 10 for four hours. Baystate Medical Center spokesman Brendan Monahan declined to comment on a time of death, saying the hospital has no information to release about the patient.
According to police, the crash occurred at 9:12 a.m. when Cadigan, driving a 2006 Toyota Corolla, entered the intersection traveling eastbound on Valley Road and collided with a van traveling southbound on Route 10.
A small child riding with Cadigan and the other driver, Biljana Simikic of Northampton, 37, were also transferred to Baystate Medical Center, treated and later released.
The wreck left glass scattered across the road. Two large, bent pieces of what appeared to be metal remained on the asphalt after the crash. The sedan’s front end appeared to be seriously damaged, as did the passenger side of the van.
The Southampton Police and Fire Departments, Eastampton Fire Department and Westfield Fire Department responded to the scene. The Easthampton Police Department assisted and the Massachusetts State Police assisted and were brought in for accident reconstruction.
