A portion of Route 21 in Belchertown reopened at about 9 a.m. today after being closed for almost 17 hours due to a fiery crash.
A Hulmes Transportation Services van was traveling northbound on Chauncey Walker Street/Route 21 when it went off the road and hit a utility pole at about 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, Belchertown Police Sgt. Bruce Jenks said.
The van, which had one passenger, caught fire, but nobody was injured. The driver was a 69-year-old man from Belchertown.
Some buildings in the area lost power and phone service after the van hit the utility pole. Jenks said theBelchertown Police Department’s phones were down after the crash.
Crews from Verizon and National Grid are on the scene working to repair damage, Jenks said. One lane of Route 21 is open while crews are on site.
