SOUTH HADLEY — Officials evacuated two buildings at Mount Holyoke College on Thursday evening after a contractor punctured a gas main.
Police and fire were called to the scene on Lower Lake Road at 5:15 p.m. While Columbia Gas crews worked to shut off the gas, officials evacuated 20 people from Blanchard Hall and a neighboring building, said Andrea Luppi, a spokeswoman for Columbia Gas.
“It’s safe now,” she said. “Luckily school’s not in session.”
Luppi said crews will return Friday morning to repair the gas main. She said it remains unknown how long it will take to fix.
