NORTHAMPTON — A Boston woman was given three years probation Friday after admitting in court last week that she cashed more than $13,000 in fake checks.
Aisha Freeman, 40, pleaded guilty June 23 in Hampshire Superior Court to two counts of larceny greater than $250 by a single scheme and eight counts of uttering a false check.
On Friday, Judge John Ferrara sentenced Freeman to a two-year House of Correction sentence as well as another two-year House of Correction sentence, each suspended for a three-year probation period.
Freeman also received another probation term that will span three years, but each of the sentences are served concurrently, meaning — all in all — she’ll spend three years on probation, public defender Korrina Burnham said outside court Friday.
Prosecutors allege that Freeman cashed checks in the name of Northampton Area Pediatrics at four different Florence Bank locations in Hampshire County in October 2013.
Burnham said in court that her client’s participation in the scheme stemmed from a problem with substance abuse. Freeman’s probation terms include abstaining from drugs and alcohol, maintaining employment, continuing counseling services and paying $13,895 restitution to Florence Bank.
