AMHERST — The Association for Muslims of the United States in Amherst will hold a celebration Thursday to mark the end of Ramadan, the religion’s holiest month.
Ramadan, a fasting holiday during which observing Muslims don’t eat or drink until sunset, traditionally ends in a three-day celebration called Eid al-Fitr, meaning in English, “the festival of breaking the fast.” The celebration in Amherst will take place on the town common at 6 p.m. and will include food and refreshments.
According to the event’s webpage, the celebration is meant to encourage people to live in peace and good health. The page read, in part, “Join us and show everybody that true Islam is only about spreading health and peace in all aspects.”
