SOUTH HADLEY — A gas main leak shut down Newton Street for about four hours Friday afternoon, according to the South Hadley Fire District 1.
A small portion of busy Newton Street was closed from shortly after noon to about 4 p.m. as Columbia Gas worked to repair the leak. Police created a detour for drivers, according to the fire department. There were no injuries. The leak was caused by a water break that started at 4 a.m. A piece of asphalt from the break fell into the hole and damaged the gas main, causing the leak, according to the fire department.
In addition to firefighters, South Hadley Police, the South Hadley Water Department and Columbia Gas responded to the scene.
