NORTHAMPTON — A fire broke out in a multi-unit residence at 178 Prospect Street early Monday morning, drawing a response from Northampton, Amherst and Southampton fire departments.
The fire was reported at 1:32 a.m. and was quickly contained when crews arrived, according to Deputy Fire Chief William Millan. The blaze was mostly isolated to one unit on the second floor, he said.
The cause was determined to be an electrical malfunction in a refrigerator in that unit, according to Millan.
Millan said that the fire caused approximately $95,000 worth of damage, but no injuries were reported. It is unclear how many people have been displaced, but the Red Cross was contacted “to assist with lodging,” he said.
