SOUTH HADLEY — A small fire that started in the roof of a home at 111 Albert St. was put out by a neighbor Tuesday evening, according to South Hadley Fire District #1.

The Fire Department received a call at 6:10 p.m., and the flames had been extinguished by a neighbor with a garden hose by the time firefighters arrived at 6:14 p.m.

The fire was caused by an exhaust fan that malfunctioned and caught fire in the attic, according to officials. There were no injuries and the two elderly occupants of the home were not displaced. The fire caused an estimated $5,000 in damage, according to the Fire Department.

South Hadley Fire District #1 responded with an engine and a ladder, and South Hadley Fire District #2 responded with an engine for mutual aid.
