THE BFG: A girl named Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) encounters the Big Friendly Giant (Mark Rylance) who, despite his intimidating appearance, turns out to be a kindhearted soul who is considered an outcast by the other giants because he refuses to eat children. Also stars Penelope Wilton. Rated PG.

DARK HORSE: Set in a former mining village in Wales, this documentary is the inspirational true story of a group of friends from a working men’s club who decide to take on the elite ‘sport of kings’ and breed themselves a racehorse. Directed and written by Louise Diamond. Rated PG.

FREE STATE OF JONES: A drama based on the life of former Confederate soldier Newton Knight, who led an armed rebellion against the Confederacy in Jones County, Mississippi during the Civil War. Stars Matthew McConaughey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mahershala Ali, Keri Russell. Rated R.

GHOSTBUSTERS: The Ghostbusters are back, but this time, it’s all about the women: Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones. This summer, they’re here to save the world. Rated PG-13.

HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE: A national manhunt is ordered for a rebellious kid and his foster uncle who go missing in the wild New Zealand bush. Stars Sam Neill, Julian Dennison, Rima Te Wiata. Rated PG-13.

INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE: Two decades after the first Independence Day invasion, Earth is faced with a new extra-Solar threat. But will mankind’s new space defenses be enough? Directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman. Rated PG-13.

THE LEGEND OF TARZAN: After acclimating to his life in London, Tarzan (Alexander Skarsgård) is called back to the jungle to investigate the activities at a mining encampment. Also stars Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, Margot Robbie. Rated PG-13. 

MIKE AND DAVE NEED WEDDING DATES: Two brothers place an online ad to find dates for a wedding and the ad goes viral. Stars Zac Efron, Adam Devine, Anna Kendrick. Rated R.

THE MUSIC OF STRANGERS: YO-YO MA & THE SILK ROAD ENSEMBLE: Cellist Yo-Yo Ma and other international artists of The Silk Road Project discuss their philosophies on music and culture. Rated PG-13.
THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR: Former police sergeant Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) is now head of security for Senator Charlene Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), the front-runner in the presidential race due to her vow to eliminate The Purge. Also stars Mykelti Williamson. Rated R.

THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS: A terrier named Max (the voice of Louis C.K.) regularly invites his friends to hang out at his place while his owner is gone, but his quiet life is upended when said owner also takes in Duke (the voice of Eric Stonestreet), a stray mutt whom Max instantly dislikes. Also stars the voices of Kevin Hart, Albert Brooks, Dana Carvey. Rated PG.

THE SHALLOWS: A mere 200 yards from shore, young pro surfer Nancy is attacked by a great white shark, with her short journey to safety becoming the ultimate contest of wills. Stars Blake Lively. Rated PG-13.

 SWISS ARMY MAN: A hopeless man stranded in the wilderness befriends a dead body and together they go on a surreal journey to get home. Stars Paul Dano, Daniel Radcliffe, Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Rated R.

 WIENER-DOG: A dachshund passes from oddball owner to oddball owner, whose radically dysfunctional lives are all impacted by the pooch. Stars Greta Gerwig, Keaton Nigel Cooke, Tracy Letts. Rated R.

THE LOBSTER: In a dystopian future, single people are obliged to find a romantic partner. If they don’t, they will be transformed into beasts. Stars Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Jessica Barden. Rated R.

CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE: In this action-comedy, Bob Stone, once a bullied teenage geek who became a tough CIA agent, comes back to his high school reunion and recruits his former hot-shot classmate, Calvin Joyner, now a bored accountant, to join him on a dangerous mission. FINDING DORY: In a sequel to the popular 2003 Pixar animated film “Finding Nemo,” the forgetful Dory, a blue tang fish, and many of her friends return to try and reunite Dory with her family. With the voices of Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks, Ed O’Neill, Diane Keaton and others. Rated PG.
