A recent letter in the Gazette said: “Where no guns are allowed we see the most gun violence.” That’s another false statement presented as an assertion of fact.
Fact: Research by the Centers for Disease Control, the Harvard Injury Control Center, the American Journal of Public Health and numerous other data analyses has repeatedly shown that the rate of death by gun violence varies inversely with the strictness of a state’s gun laws. In other words, strict gun laws work.
In New York, with some of the tightest gun laws in America, the gun-death rate is 5 deaths per 100,000 people; in Arizona, where no laws restrict the right to carry a concealed weapon, it is 15.1 per 100,000.
