AMHERST — A strong smell that led to a hazardous materials response team and a bomb squad being called Wednesday to Brandywine Apartments came not from hazardous chemicals but from somebody distilling urine.

Police responded to building 6 of the apartment complex off Meadow Street about 4:30 p.m. after the manager discovered several unmarked glass containers containing liquids in an apartment. The manager entered the apartment after a neighboring tenant complained of a strong smell, Amherst Assistant Fire Chief Lindsay Stromgren said Wednesday night.

The Fire Department, Hazmat team, bomb squad and state Department of Environmental Protection arrived after the 12-unit building’s evacuation. The Hazmat team determined the materials didn’t pose a risk, police said Thursday morning, and the scene was cleared.

The tenant of the apartment that warranted the call returned home during the investigation and was taken to the hospital for evaluation, Stromgren said. Police could not comment further on the tenant’s condition Thursday morning.

The other 11 tenants of building 6 returned to their units Wednesday night. Police said nobody will face charges in the incident.
