A 23-year-old Amherst man will be summoned to court on a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon after he allegedly sprayed a person with pepper spray near the corner of North Pleasant Street and Kellogg Avenue at 10:21 p.m. Monday, police said.

Raymond C. Viens, 58, of Ludlow, was arrested at 12:47 a.m. Tuesday on Main Street on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, speeding and going the wrong way down a one-way. An officer made the stop when Viens was observed driving the wrong way on Cracker Barrel Alley. Police said Viens appeared lethargic and was slurring his speech. He also failed at least one field sobriety test and refused to complete others.

Police said a man walking his dog in the area of Summer Street called about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday to report an unconscious person on the ground. Julia C. Cox, 28, 47 Summer St., Apt. D, was roused awake when police arrived . On the ground around her were assorted items, including a blue vial and a straw containing cocaine residue, according to police. Cox was arrested on a charge of possession of cocaine, police said.

Susan J. Chicoine, 51, of Chicopee, was arrested about 3 p.m. Monday on charges of operating while under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of property damage. Police said Chicoine appeared dazed and disheveled while operating her vehicle, drove on a curb near Hampton Avenue and struck a crosswalk sign. She attempted to correct the path of her vehicle only to again strike the same sign, police said When police stopped her, an officer asked if she had been drinking. “A little bit,” she told the officer who noted the odor of alcohol on Chicoine as well as slurred speech. The woman was unable to maintain proper balance and could not complete field sobriety tests, police said.
