The Gazette’s July 13 editorial offered an ill-thought-out warning about Amherst becoming a “pot highway” and urges that marijuana be considered a “substance of concern.”
For the record, very, very few reputable researchers think that pot is a serious health problem. No one has ever had an overdose or died from using pot. Prohibition has proven disastrous.
The modest increase in “access” to pot in Colorado has produced no recorded negative effects on health. The Gazette should stop trying to revive the 1960s culture wars.
If the Gazette’s campaign succeeds, the only result will be that, once again, Hadley, not Amherst, will reap the tax benefits.
