Red-Bellied Woodpecker
Route 9, Belchertown
Photograph and text by Anne E. Ely, South Hadley
Most of the time when I see red-bellied woodpeckers they’re usually high up in a tree drilling away for lunch. In May, off Route 9 in Belchertown, this beautiful male landed low in a lilac bush and was cooperative enough to stay until I made my photo. I used a tripod mounted DSLR camera and a medium length telephoto lens.
