John Kolvenbach’s 2014 two-act “Sister Play” opens with the arrival of Anna and her younger sister, Lilly, at their late father’s moldering Cape Cod house. The 30-something women are accompanied by Anna’s husband, Malcolm, who, despite grousing about being wedged between the close-knit sisters, enjoys the dual mothering he receives. Entering to disrupt the delicate three-way balance is William, a mild-mannered, Texas-born drifter whom Lilly meets on the roadside when she goes out for a drive. Lilly, it appears, is smitten, while Malcolm is ambivalent and Anna is appalled, insisting that the enigmatic stranger must depart immediately.
“There’s lots of fine theatre happening in the Berkshires this summer, but ‘Sister play’ at Chester Theatre needs to be top on everyone’s list,” says the Springfield-based In The Spotlight: “Charming, persuasive, skillfully acted and staged, theatergoers will enjoy watching four fine performers steal the show, all at the same time.”
Final performances at Chester Town Hall are Thursday, Friday and Sunday at 2 p.m., and Saturday at 8 p.m. $37 general; $10 students. chestertheatre.org
