MONTAGUE — Turners Falls and Montague Center firefighters found themselves fighting to control a brush fire for hours Monday night.
The fire, which Captain Leon Ambo of the Turners Falls Fire Department said is believed to have been caused by an improperly disposed of campfire, broke out just before 10 p.m. Monday night near Hannigan Brook Road.
Ambo said firefighters initially had trouble getting equipment to the scene, since there were no nearby roads leading directly to the fire. They had to drag hoses about 400 feet.
“It wasn’t a big fire, but the problem was accessing it,” Ambo said. He estimated about three-quarters of an acre burned.
Firefighters were on scene until about 3:30 a.m., Ambo said. Around 9:15 a.m., emergency radio communications indicated that firefighters were returning to the scene.
No further information was available Tuesday night.
