Northampton High School students Quinn Nortonsmith and Nick Whitcomb competed for the Hampshire Regional YMCA Dolphins Swim Team at the YMCA Long Course National Championship meet in Indianapolis.
Whitcomb reached the finals in two events. He placed 21st in the 100-meter backstroke in 1 minutes, 1.12 seconds. He also placed 14th in the 50 backstroke in 28.26 seconds.
Whitcomb was also 51st in the 200 back in 2:16.25.
Nortonsmith competed in the 50 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke. He was 54th in the 50 in 32.58. He was 71st in the 100 in 1:11.66.
The Dolphins are coached by Tim Ramos.
Frontier Regional has announced the starting times for its fall sports programs.
Varsity and junior varsity football: conditioning practice starts Friday from 4 p.m. to 6.
Boys and girls cross country (grades 7-12): Aug. 25, 6 p.m.
Boys varsity and JV soccer tryouts (grades 7-12): Aug. 25, 10:30 a.m.-1 and 4-5:30 p.m., Herlihy Park.
Girls varsity, JV and middle school soccer tryouts (grades 7-12): Aug. 25, 8-10 a.m. and 6-7:30 p.m. at Herlihy Park.
Varsity, JV and middle school field hockey: Aug. 25, 9 a.m. to noon.
Girls volleyball tryouts: Aug. 25, returning players 9 a.m. to noon and 3:30-6 p.m.; grades 7-8 newcomers, 12:30-3 p.m.
Golf tryouts (grades 7-12): Aug. 25, 3 p.m. at Cherry Hill Golf Course in Amherst.
Middle school football starts Aug. 31 from 2:30-4:30.
Boys middle school soccer: Aug. 29, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sunderland Elementary.
The Deerfield Recreation Department will hold a pre-K soccer program on Mondays from Sept. 19 to Oct. 10.
The program will teach the basics of soccer: kicking, dribbling, trapping, throw-ins and running, through drills and games. Children will be taught by coaches and teams from Deerfield Academy by using a step-by-step approach that builds confidence and self-esteem and makes sports fun.
A parent must attend every session. Participants will receiver one soccer ball and shin guards.
The program is open to 3- and 4-year-old Deerfield Residents. Only 15 slots are available.
The program will run from 5 p.m. to 6 at Old Deerfield baseball field on Routs 5 and 10.
Fee is $40.
The department is also sponsoring youth soccer programs for children in grades K-6. Registration is Thursday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. or Sept. 2 from 5-6, both dates at Town Hall at 8 Conway St., South Deerfield. Fee is $50.

Flag Football Signups
Registrations are being taken for the Northampton Parks & Recreation Flag Football program.
Introductory programs for children entering grades 1-4 and 5-8 will be held Saturdays, from 12:30 p.m. to 2, from Sept. 10 through Oct. 22 at JFK Middle School.
Volunteer coaches are needed.
The rec department is also offering a Parent & Child Pre-K and Youth Soccer Program on Saturday mornings at Look Park.
The seven-week program starts Sept. 10 and runs thru Oct. 22. The Preschool and Kindergarten divisions are coed, while the first-and-second grade division has both boys and girls teams.
