NEW SALEM — A small private plane was forced to make an emergency landing on a sandbar in the Quabbin Reservoir Tuesday afternoon after the pilot reported engine trouble at 2:52 p.m. to state police.

Troopers assigned to the state police barracks in Belchertown and the air wing, and Federal Aviation Administration and Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation personnel responded.

State Police spokesman David Procopio said the single-engine plane landed in the northern part of the reservoir in New Salem. The plane landed upright and the pilot did not sustain any injuries. Procopio said he does not believe there were any passengers on the plane.

State Police planned to take the pilot off the sandbar by boat and Procopio said a determination had not been made about how to remove the plane. No information was available about the origin or destination of the plane.
