GREENFIELD — The increasingly popular sport of disc golf is coming to The Meadows Golf Course — at least temporarily.
This Saturday, a nine-hole disc golf course will be set up alongside the club’s normal nine-hole golf course for the day. The sport, which has seen a significant rise in popularity over the past decade, is similar to regular golf, but uses flying discs instead of a ball, which are aimed at a disc pole hole — a pole with chains and a basket where the disc lands.
Pure Flight, an Amherst-based disc golf company, will set up the temporary course on The Meadows’ golf course Saturday, where the two games will be played side-by-side. For $10, people can play disc golf all day.
“One day this weekend is our trial to it, and then we’re going from there,” said Donna Giard, co-manager of The Meadows. “We’re probably going to start doing it on a more regular basis.”
She said the plan came about after two people from Pure Flight stopped by the golf course’s restaurant and pitched the idea of setting up disc golf.
“The guys approached us and they thought it would be a great course, she said. “We’re just a small-town course that was welcoming to the idea.”
Giard said The Meadows is considering adding the sport to the course permanently — especially because it can still be played with a little snow on the ground.
Instructors from Pure Flight will be available throughout the day to teach participants how to play, she said, adding they will also be selling equipment.
Building 8 Brewing of Northampton is sponsoring the event, and the course’s restaurant will be open and serving its full menu.
