NORTHAMPTON — A state Hazardous Materials Response team was called to an apartment building on State Street Wednesday to help local police and fire officials conduct an investigation.

At about 6 p.m. State Street was closed to traffic between Trumbull Road and Summer Street while Northampton police, fire and the hazmat team were on the scene. As a house on the block was brightly illuminated with a spotlight, the road remained closed to traffic until about 11 p.m.

According to Jennifer Mieth, spokeswoman for the state Department of Fire Services, the investigation is “tier 1,” indicating the lowest level of action by the hazmat team. The team is on site primarily to assist local police and firefighters in their investigation, she said.

Police Capt. John Cartledge said there is no threat to the community.

Northampton Police declined to provide additional information Wednesday night because the investigation continues.
