A REAL-LIFE THRILLER
I discovered a new book at Forbes Library this week that I can’t put down. “The Winter Fortress” details the heroic efforts during World War II of Norwegian commandoes, trained in Great Britain, to destroy a Norwegian plant that was central to Germany’s plans to build an atomic bomb. This book’s got it all — espionage, night-time parachute drops, wilderness survival, evil Nazis, massive manhunts and a near-impossible mission. It’s a rarity: a little-known story from the much-plumbed history of WWII.
ANOTHER GOOD BET
A new college year means new exhibits at school galleries. Check out the Augusta Savage Gallery at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, which on Monday opens “About Face,” a group exhibit on portraiture. 545-5177
