Over the course of a 2-1 loss to West Springfield, the Amherst Regional boys soccer team lost two goalies to injuries at home.

Aiden Bass, the starter, made an aggressive play on a breakaway and was hurt.

“We think he hit his head on the ground,” Amherst coach Michael Rudd said. “It was an accident, but he didn’t know where he was.”

An ambulance transported Bass to the hospital with a possible concussion.

John Swanson, Bass’ replacement, broke his finger on a shot attempt, according to Rudd.

That left Declan Gray-Mullen (two saves) to come in and keep the Hurricanes close.

West Springfield scored with 11 minutes left in the game to take the lead.

Samson Heyer scored Amherst’s goal.

Hopkins Academy 1, Athol 1 — Vance Cannella gave the Golden Hawks a 1-0 lead, but the Red Raiders answered as the teams played to a draw in Athol.

Hopkins goalie Jack Feltovic with four saves.

Smith Academy 4, Sci Tech 1 — Matt Bouley scored two goals in a season-opening road win.

Liam Pitrat had a goal and an assist, and Thomas Hammond also scored for the Falcons (1-0, 1-0 McGrath South).

Julian Zapata chipped in two assists.

Gateway 2, Granby 0 — The Gators blanked the Rams on the road behind five saves from Shane Mastello.

Evan Lee and Nick Cooper had a goal and an assist each for Gateway (0-1-1).

Zach Gorham made three saves for Granby (1-1).

Frontier 3, Easthampton 0 — Tyler Mayrand, Dan Bronke and Ian Newman scored for the visiting Red Hawks.

Peter Bronke made three saves in net for Frontier (1-0).

For Easthampton (0-1), Drew Caires stopped nine shots. Jacob Bacis played well defensively for the Eagles.

Hampshire Regional 2, Monson 0 — Oguzhan Ibic scored his first varsity goal for the Raiders in a win at home.

Ibic’s goal opened the scoring for Hampshire (1-0). Dan McColgan assisted.

Ioannis Iatroudis made eight saves in the shutout.

Dillon Pooler scored the other goal for the Raiders.

Girls soccer

Smith Voke 4, Putnam 0 — Gabby Petlock scored twice for the Vikings (1-0) in their season opening win at home.

Shannon Ryan and Marissa Mayhew both had a goal and an assist for Smith.

Maddisin Atkinson made seven saves in net.

Field hockey

South Hadley 4, Mohawk 1 — Savannah Sudika’s first varsity goal came at a good time for the Tigers.

Sudika broke a 1-1 tie in the first half as South Hadley went on to win its season opener at home.

Sarah Lacey gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Julia Miele (assist) and Hannah Menard extended the lead in the second half.

Kate O’Neil and Sarah Shea each had one assist, while Brittany Cote made 13 saves, including several in the final minutes as the Warriors applied constant pressure.

Smith Academy 3, Mahar 1 — Olivia Cavanaugh’s two second-half goals propelled the Falcons, who trailed 1-0, on the road.

Izzy Duseau had a goal and an assist, while Santana Dubois had one assist.

Taegan Cavanaugh made two saves to earn the win.

Minnechaug 8, Amherst Regional 0 — The Hurricanes were shutout on the road.

Girls volleyball

Frontier 3, Chicopee Comp 0 — Lauren Davenport put away 12 kills and led the team with 24 total attacks for the Red Hawks (2-0).

Ella Deane had 22 assists for Frontier.

Frontier won 25-14, 25-17, 28-26 on the road.

Belchertown 3, Mohawk 0 — Cara McKenzie had nine aces and six kills in a win for the Orioles (1-0) on the road.

Belchertown won 25-14, 25-6, 25-15.

Amherst 3, Westfield 0 — The Hurricanes (2-0) got eight kills from Meg Rice and 25 assists from Teya Nolan in a 25-15, 25-12, 25-13 road win.
