The Smith Academy and Frontier Regional field hockey teams met for the first time this season on Tuesday.
Round 1 went to the defending Western Massachusetts Division 2 champion Red Hawks.
Mackenzie Patterson scored in the first half as Frontier won, 1-0, in Hatfield.
Skyla Burniske made two saves for the Red Hawks (5-1, 3-1 North).
Taeghan Cavanaugh finished with 11 stops for the Falcons (1-2-1, 1-2).
Greenfield 3, Northampton 1 — The Green Wave (4-0) won the matchup of undefeated teams, jumping out to a 2-0 lead en route to beating the Blue Devils (3-1).
Megan McCarthy scored an unassisted goal with 8:02 left to cut the deficit in half.
Danielle Parent made 12 saves in the loss.
Hopkins Academy 1, Gateway Regional 0 — Allison Jenks banked a free kick off the crossbar and into the net to clinch a home win.
She was about 10 yards outside the penalty area in the 34th minute for the Golden Hawks (5-0, 2-0 Pioneer South).
Miranda Pitta made 10 saves for Hopkins, while Samantha Jenks helped keep Gateway’s leading scorer Jessica Van Heynigan off the scoresheet.
Rebecca Herman stopped eight shots for the Gators (4-1-1, 2-1 Pioneer South).
South Hadley 6, Easthampton 0 — Lindsay Marchenski and Maeve Fitzgerald both netted two goals in the Tigers (4-1) road win over the Eagles (1-4).
The Tigers offense exploded for five goals in the second half.
Breezy Couture and Alexa Blaney also scored for South Hadley. Sophie Gatzounas made two saves in the shutout.
Lily Pioli made 10 saves for Easthampton.
Smith Voke 3, Pathfinder 0 — Maddisin Atkinson was a brick wall in net for the Vikings in a road win.
Atkinson made 14 saves to collect the shutout.
Marissa Meyhew, Shannon Ryan and Gabby Petlock each had a goal.
Sydney Cyr added an assist for the Vikings.
Southwick 1, Hampshire Regional 0 — Down by a goal late in the game, the Raiders saw multiple scoring opportunities hit the crossbar in a home loss.
Sam Tersavich and Vissi Rizos both had shots bounce off the post late in the game.
Southwick scored midway through the second half.
Melissa Gagnon made seven saves for the Hampshire (1-2-1).
Amherst Regional 4, Central 0 — Sage DeChiara scored twice and added an assist for the Hurricanes in a home win.
Becky Caracker and Jasmine McMickle also found the net.
Erin Clotfelter and Caracker added assists, while Reilly Lepak stopped three shots and Amalia Butler had four saves for Amherst (2-1-1, 2-0-1 Central).
Frontier Regional 6, Athol 1 — The Red Hawks jumped all over the Red Raiders at home.
Lilly Haley and Katie Thompson both had two goals for Frontier (3-2).
Julia Riordan and Victoria Speth also scored.
Alexa Boyden made two saves in net
Chicopee 0, South Hadley 0 — The Tigers (0-6-1) picked up their first point of the season with the draw at home.
Nehemiah Wilson made 12 saves, while Jon Samlall put pressure on the Pacers defense.
Gehrig Burnett made six saves for Chicopee.
Putnam 0, Smith Vocational 0 — Jamie Mikalonis made 12 saves to keep a clean sheet in a scoreless tie for the Vikings (1-3-1, 0-1-1 Tri-County North).
Northampton 1, Holyoke 1 — JD Pruett scored in the second half to secure a road point in the Moriarty League.
Nick Heafey assisted on the goal, and Ian Hutchins made seven saves for Northampton (0-3-2, 0-1-1).
“It’s a turnaround game for us,” Blue Devils coach Brian Brown said.
Easthampton 5, St. Mary’s 1 — Johnny Bara scored twice, while Spenser Polonis, Junior Sumba and Mohamed Zabir each added one goal as the Eagles (3-2) matched their win total from last season with the victory in Westfield.
Tyler Karakula, Henry Ferland, Chris Williams and Sam Colenback each had one assist.
Drew Caires stopped three first-half shots, while Joe Brough made four in the second half.
Frontier Regional 3, Agawam 2 — The Brownies took the Red Hawks to a fifth set, but Frontier closed them out 15-7 in the final set at home.
Frontier let a 2-0 lead slip away in the match.
Laura Davenport had 19 kills for the Red Hawks (4-2). Ella Deane had 31 assists.
Set scores were 25-17, 25-13, 23-25, 20-25 and 15-7.
South Hadley 3 Easthampton 1 — Kiana Turner had 11 kills, five aces and seven digs in a 25-11, 21-25, 25-15, 25-19 road win for the Tigers.
Morgan Adams had 12 assists for South Hadley (5-1).
For the Eagles (3-4), Veronica Hing had four kills, five assists and 10 digs.
Anna Stabile went for seven kills for Easthampton.
Amherst Regional 3, Longmeadow 0 — Claire Basler-Chang had nine kills and 12 digs in a 25-16, 25-13, 25-21 road victory.
Nina Hayes added six aces, five kills and six digs.
Teya Nolan dished out 22 assists for Amherst (6-0, 1-0 Eastern).
