GREENFIELD — With just under five minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Greenfield football team took advantage of a turnover on downs by Belchertown, went down the field and finished the drive on a 6-yard touchdown run by Tyler Miner to cut Belchertown’s lead to three.

After the Orioles stopped the 2-point conversion by the Green Wave, Greenfield attempted an onside kick that was recovered by Belchertown, sealing the 15-12 victory for the Orioles, their first of the season.

“Huge, huge for team morale,” said Belchertown coach Chris Bourget. “To come up here, it’s a tough place to play. … To come up here and win is huge for our team and kids.”

Belchertown (1-2) got started early, scoring the first touchdown of the game with 4:36 remaining in the first quarter on a run by senior running back Cameron Cass.

While sharing running back duties with Jackson Leduc, Cass finished with 15 carries for 71 yards, including 54 in the second half.

“I (didn’t) think much, just put my head down and (ran), see if I can get a few extra yards,” Cass said. “My line … They put it all in there and I was able to get through.”

Greenfield (1-2) scored with 5:52 left in the second quarter, when Miner ran the ball in 2 yards to cut Belchertown’s lead to 8-6.

The Green Wave attempted a 2-point conversion to tie the game. Miner handed the ball off to sophomore runner back RJ Byrd, who was tackled for a 4-yard loss on the play, holding the score at 8-6. Byrd finished with 25 carries for 103 yards and one fumble.

Greenfield attempted 2-point conversions on both touchdowns, but failed each time.

“Hold the line and hold still,” Cass said about the defensive mindset during the attempts. “We knew that, sure, we just gave up a touchdown, but we can’t give up. If you let that up, they’re right back in the game.”

Throughout the game, Bourget switched between Leduc and John Flink at quarterback.

“Jack (Leduc) is a great quarterback, Jack is a great running back,” Bourget said. “We want to use his attributes best for the team, to be successful. Using him at some running back and some at quarterback gives us some good balance and gives us another ball carrier that can be explosive and makes us more diversified as an offense.”

Leduc delivered the pass that sealed the game and put the Orioles ahead for good. After escaping pressure from a Greenfield blitz, he found freshman receiver Hunter Klingensmith for a 74-yard touchdown — Leduc’s only completion of the day.

“You have to be lucky to be good sometimes,” Bourget said. “Hunter stepped up and high-pointed the ball and made a tremendous boost going into the half.”

One word is all Bourget used to describe what they bring into next week when they host Ludlow: “momentum.”
