The UMass field hockey team fell to No. 18 Stanford, 1-0, at the Gladchuk Sports Complex on Friday afternoon.

Stanford (3-4) took advantage of one of the few opportunities it had.

Jessica Welch scored in the 62nd minute when she dribbled into the circle and shot high into the left side. It marked one of only seven shots allowed by the UMass defense while only two of those attempts were on net.

UMass (4-4) had six shots, including three directed at the cage, but nothing got past Kelsey Bing.

Emily Hazard made one stop for the Minutewomen.

UMass plays No. 9 Boston College on Sunday in Chestnut Hill, at 2 p.m.
