HARWICH – It wasn’t going to be an ordinary day watching a football game when just a mere 2½ hours before kickoff between Easthampton and Dennis-Yarmouth, officials switched sites from Alan Carlson Field at D-Y to the Monomoy High School Athletic Complex in Harwich.
The torrential downpours of Friday night and the steady rain of Saturday morning made the Dolphins’ home field unplayable. However, the artificial turf at Monomoy was available and ready to use, so, the game was moved nine miles away.
The Dolphins dominated every facet of the game, rolling to a 42-0 victory against Easthampton in its first-ever football meeting.
“I can’t thank the administration and coaching staff at Monomoy enough,” said D-Y coach and athletic director Paul Funk. “We could not have played at D-Y without ruining the field for the rest of the season. It was not playable. They helped us out a lot and we are grateful.”
The Dolphins rolled up 366 yards of offense in the game that was played in a steady drizzle. They surged to a 36-0 halftime lead and pulled the starters late in the second quarter.
Defensively, D-Y allowed the Eagles just one first down and negative-16 yards on offense in the first half. For the game, Easthampton finished with just 65 yards in total offense on 42 plays.
“We’re getting better tackling. We’re getting better every week,” Funk said of his defense. “I was happy with the way we executed as a team on both sides of the ball. Everybody pitched in.”
Easthampton’s inability to handle the snaps from center in the spread offense hindered its offense. Eleven bad snaps resulted in lost yardage for quarterback Max Weir. Any time they had some momentum, the Eagles made mistakes that pushed them backwards and D-Y took advantage
“I thought our front line was very effective,” Funk added. “We had some solid play from Crary (Ryan) and Lucas DeFrancesco. They did a nice job up front.”
After the initial offensive possession for the Dolphins (3-1) ended with an interception, its only turnover of the wet afternoon, the defense held Easthampton (0-4) and forced the Eagles to punt, giving the home team the ball on its own 26-yard line. Seven plays later, Jonah Arsenault raced into the end zone on a 5-yard scamper and the rout was on. The junior fullback finished the day with six carries for 35 yards and the TD.
Payton Doyle added the 2-point conversion, the first of three for the sophomore quarterback.
