WARE — The Smith Vocational football team ran into a defensive buzz saw Friday night.
Ware continued its ability to frustrate the opposition with a dominating defense and defeated the Vikings, 49-0.
Ware (3-1, 2-0 Tri-County) was led by Devin Slattery, who two scored touchdowns. He jump started the Indians with scoring runs of 6 and 42 yards.
This was a mistake-prone game for the Vikings (0-4, 0-1). The Indians capitalize on several of them to build a 28-0 first quarter lead.
Costly penalties, poor tacking on punt returns and a fumble on their own 12-yard line, hurt the young Vikings, who will look to eliminate them as they build experience.
“We did some good things and that’s what we need to sustain,” Smith coach Tony Capua said. “We need to build off that and continue to get better.”
Ware used its size, speed and blocking ability to build a big lead. The Indians have pitched shutouts in three of their last four games.
“Give credit to Ware,” Capua said. “They’re a good football team and they put us in some tough spots.”
The Vikings could not combat the Indians’ speed, especially quarterback Ryan Johnson (six carries, 67 yards). Add a bruising fullback like Fernando Montalban (nine carries, 46 yards) to the mix and it was a lethal combination.
One bright spot for the Vikings was fullback Stone Mitchell, who fought for every inch of his 59 yards.
“Stone’s been a great player for us,” Capua said. “That energy he brings, that fire and the passion he brings will rub off on our younger players.”
Smith Voke ran 30 plays during the first half, while Ware ran 13, but the Indians made the most of their plays.
Ware used a quick-strike offense to move to a 34-0 halftime lead.
A bad snap on punt formation gave Ware the ball on the Smith 22. It took the Indians only two plays to score as Slattery scored on a 6-yard run.
Slattery scored on a 42-yard run with 3:34 left to trigger a three-touchdown spree in a matter of 2 minutes, 6 seconds to build a 28-0 advantage.
Jake Crevier hauled in a 14-yard touchdown toss from Ryan Johnson. Then Johnson scored on a 13-yard keeper.
Montalban scored on a 5-yard run early in the second quarter to give the Indians a 34-0 edge.
Ware marched 51-yards in four plays to start the second half. The drive was capped by a 31-yard quarterback scamper by Johnson as the Indians went ahead, 41-0, before John Velasquez closed the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 15-yard run.
